Leave These Things Behind When You Move
So you have finally bought your dream home; the anxiety and waiting is now over and you have finally achieved the American Dream.
Now all you have to worry about is moving into your new palace.
This fete can be more intimidating for some than others depending on the amount of stuff you have accumulated in the place you now live in as well as the size of the home or apartment you are living.
The more space we have, the more stuff we tend to accumulate its just human nature.
Organization and planning are the keys to a successful move, but there are some insider tips that everyone should know before they start their next move.
One thing that most people do not think of before they begin their move is things they should not bring.
This also includes things that should be tossed beforehand (or given away to friends or family) altogether and then things that should be taken with you personally and not get shipped with the moving company.
Of course this all depends on the distance of your move and whether or not you are moving by yourself or hiring a company to do it for you.
A recent article by Diane Schmidt of about.com, What not to pack, discusses some things that people who are moving should be aware of before they actually move.
When you're starting to plan your move, most of us concentrate on things we need to pack and don't often think about the things that we should leave behind. Flammables may be the only thing on your list, but did you know that nail polish remover should also be left with a friend?
There are some items that require special packing and handling, items that moving companies will not move if they are not properly prepared. Even if you're moving yourself, you may want to take extra care in packing certain items, especially if you're moving long distance.
The most important thing you need to do when beginning to pack is to take a look at everything you are thinking of packing and determine if it is something that is dangerous that could ruin other items if it was spilled (like the nail polish remover mentioned above.)
Any material that is flammable, corrosive or explosive is dangerous and illegal to move. If you have dangerous goods, call your local recycling pickup service, fire station or the closest EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) office to find out how you can properly dispose of these items. Or ask a neighbor or friend if they could use the item.
This includes items such as: Acid, Sterno, Darkroom Chemicals, Pesticides, Motor Oil Gasoline, Charcoal, Lighter Fluid, Fertilizer, Paints, Car Batteries, Matches, Nail Polish & Remover, Ammunition, Liquid Bleach, Aerosols, Kerosene and Pool Chemicals.
You should also think twice about sending precious items that cannot be replaced with the movers or to be shipped. Items such as photographs, personal files, address books and identification cards.
